ETHNIC GROUP

It can be noticed that the inhabitants of Dipolog are mostly migrants from Visayas, particularly from the Provinces of Cebu, Negros Oriental, Bohol, Siquijor, Leyte and Samar. There are few Ilonggos, Tausog and Pampaguenos in the city. A significant number of Chinese also reside in the city.

POPULATION SIZE

Based on the 1990 and 1995 actual census on = population, population size is said to be equal to the number of people = enumerated and counted at the locality where they live.

March 2, 1903 marked the earliest recorded = population count for Dipolog. It registered a total of 5,204 inhabitants = at that time. In 1990 Census on Population, the total population of = Dipolog soared up to 79,887 and from thereon the population continue to = grow. As of September 1, 1995 Census on Population, Dipolog City = registered a total population of 90,777.

POPULATION AND HOUSEHOLD DISTRIBUTION BY BARANGAY

Based on the 1995 Census on Population, barangay Miputak registered the highest number of both population and household. It had a total population of 11.734 and a total of 2,468 households. This constituted 12.93% of the total population of Dipolog and 13.78% of  the total households.

On the other hand, barangay San Jose had registered  a population of 1,081 only or 1.19% of the total population and 215  households or 1.20% of the total number of households.

POPULATION PROJECTION BY BARANGAY

As of September 1995 census, Dipolog City has a population of 90.777, 29.896 or 32.93% of which are living in the urban areas, while 60.881 or 67.07% are residing in the rural areas. Dipolog population accounts 11.78% of the total population of the Province of  Zamboanga del Norte.

PROPORTION OF URBAN POPULATION

The city is composed of 21 barangays to include the  poblacion which is divided into 5 barangay districts, namely; District 1- Barangay Estaka, District 2 - Barangay Biasong, District 3 -Barangay Barra, District 4- Barangay Central and District 5- Barangay Miputak. This constitutes the urban center or urban area of  Dipolog City.
 

NATURAL RESOURCES  

 

LAND AREA

Dipolog City has a total land area of 13,628  hectares. It is 1.89% of the total area of the province, which is 720,594 hectares.

LAND USE

Agriculture

Dominant land use in Dipolog is in agricultural.  The total land area of 9,093.99 hectares excluding 89.5380 hectares of = fishpond is utilized for various agricultural purposes.

Industrial

About 200 hectares are devoted to industries predominantly located outside the urban core. With the establishment of  the Industrial Park in the southern part development and expansion of this particular aspect is promising.

Commercial

Land area devoted to commercial use covers an area of about 255 hectares housing about 1,600 establishments. These are predominantly concentrated in the city proper and along major transport corridors. Well-lighted streets and peaceful environment encouraged entrepreneurs to open up businesses as reflected in the rise of related establishments.

Residential

Residential area ranks second to agriculture in land use covering about 1,920 hectares. Ten year=92s back, residential buildings have been concentrated in the city proper where transportation and employment opportunities are available. However, land use for residential recently expand in the barangays of Turno, Minaog, Dicayas, Sta. Filomena, Gulayon and Galas. The growing population encourages investors to invest in housing projects. The city government itself wil embark on such project for its employees by the end of this year.

Institutional

About 165.52 hectares are devoted for institutional  use. Schools, hospitals and government buildings are evenly distributed  in the poblacion.

Others

Spaces open for development accounts for about 153.72 hectares. Parks and recreation centers cover an area of 56.63 hectare and planned unit development has an area of 15 hectares. The city government has declared 240 hectares at Minaog and Dicayas PROFEM  area as the City's watershed and Eco-Tourism site.

Vast areas of land in the city are suitable for the production of the city=92s primary products like rice, corn, coconut, rubber, fruits and root crops except for the barangays of Miputak, Biasong and Barra due to their sandy soil.

FORESTRY

Forestry Area

The city has a total of 676 hectare of forest area, about 4.76% of its total area. A 344 hectare reforestation project has been established at barangay Cogon and another 240 hectares in barangays  Minaog and Dicayas, which are classified, as second growth forest. The only primary forest in the city is the 24 hectares in barangay San Jose, which is privately owned.

FISHERY AND AQUATIC RESOURCES

Dipolog City waters are one of the richest fishing  grounds in Western Mindanao covering an area of about 24 square miles.  About fifty-six (56) fish species are caught in marine fishing.

Types of fishing include municipal, commercial and inland or aqua-culture development. Average fish production in commercial fishing for the last three years is 409 tons, municipal fishing accounts 220 tons and aqua-culture development 61 tons.

Fishpond area of the city comprises 89.54 hectares situated at barangay Sta. Filomena, Galas, Olingan, Punta and Sicayab. Cultured species includes bangus, tilapia, crabs and prawns.

There are about 18 commercial fishing operators in  the city whose vessel's gross tonnage ranges from 4.40-14.49 tons. In municipal fishing, 295 operators have been registered having vessel  tonnage range from .56 to 2.97 tons.
